On September 11, 1990, the SPLIKA Foundation was founded by patriots from the ABC islands residing in the Netherlands, driven by passion and love for their culture and identity; to promote the recognition of Papiamento* and its language rights in the ABC islands and in the Netherlands.
“When you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
– Nelson Mandela.
The mission of the SPLIKA Foundation is to embrace the culture of the ABC islands, protect their identity, and strengthen the connection with their essence. We celebrate the authenticity of our people, our language, and our traditions. The SPLIKA Foundation organizes and facilitates activities and events for the transfer of knowledge and skills, the protection and promotion of the Papiamento* language, and reconnecting the new and old generations with their roots. The SPLIKA Foundation strengthens and protects the essence of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao.
The SPLIKA Foundation represents the Papiamento* language as a fully recognized language within the Kingdom through the unification of the two Papiamento spellings. The foundation serves as a platform with a sense of home, where everyone is educated, motivated, and inspired to embrace and strengthen the culture of the ABC islands.
In 2015 and 2016, the SPLIKA Foundation also worked to have cultural elements from Aruba, Bonaire, or Curaçao – preserved in the Netherlands – included in the Dutch National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Our Tambú and Kaha di òrgel are included in the inventory. The foundation offers workshops, lectures, and performances of cultural elements such as tambú. The goal is to inspire and motivate young people to take pride in their identity, to learn from their culture, and to understand their background.
The main objective of the SPLIKA Foundation is to create opportunities for interested individuals to engage with or remain connected to the Antillean culture. In the upcoming policy period, the SPLIKA Foundation will continue its role as an ambassador for Papiamento* and will also continue to contribute to increasing knowledge about the culture and history of the islands.
The values of SPLIKA are based on passion, love, and pride for our mother tongue and culture.
The SPLIKA Foundation focuses not only on activities within the Netherlands for the societal strengthening of Papiamento* and the culture of the ABC islands but also provides support through Papiamento* courses to, among others, expatriates, medical students, and children going to Aruba, Bonaire, or Curaçao for work or vacation.
Are you interested in one of our Papiamento* courses or would you like to know more about our foundation and collaborate? Fill out the form, and one of our team members will contact you as soon as possible.
